A key component of any successful lifestyle change is inspiration, and the Midland Community Center Lose & Win participants need look no further than the employee in charge of the program, Trisha Kayden.

A Certified Personal Trainer at the Midland Community Center for almost 2 years, Trisha knows intimately the effort and commitment required to change eating habits, embrace training, and transform lifestyle choices.

Five years ago, Trisha, at 5’ 2”, weighed over 200 pounds.  Being a single mother of 2 girls, the added weight made it difficult to keep up with her daughters’ active lifestyles.   Add to that the challenge of having her oldest daughter Holly diagnosed with autism.

“As Holly got older, she got faster, and I realized one day as she ran out of the house toward the road, that I wasn’t going to be able to catch her,” recounts Trisha.  “It was at that point that I realized I needed to make a change. I had to make sure I could take care of my daughter.”

Trisha began making healthy eating choices, and developed a plan.

“I began eating smaller portions, made sure I had lean protein at every meal, chose good carbs, and added fruits and vegetables.  I also gave myself a free day where I could eat whatever I wanted.  That way I knew I could resist having a cookie on Wednesday, knowing I could eat it on Friday – my free day!”

Trisha also participated in a weight loss challenge, and WON!

Fast-forward 3 years, and 64 pounds later (and lighter); Trisha obtained her group fitness and personal training certifications.

When asked what the most rewarding part of training is, she replies, “I gravitate toward the middle-aged woman trying to lose some weight and get healthy.  I know what they are going through because I’ve been there.”

And what advice she would give to Lose & Win participants?  Trisha has four simple suggestions.

“Set small attainable goals, find a buddy if possible, make sure to attend the weigh-ins, and most importantly, JUST MOVE!”
