If you’re looking to squeeze more time into your day (and who isn’t?), summer is the best time to capitalize on extra hours of daylight.  Spending time outdoors with friends or family is a great way to promote social, mental, and physical health, and maintain a healthy holistic balance.

To help you get started, we’ve listed 10 fun activities to keep you active and engaged this summer.

  1. Snowball fight in July! You wouldn’t believe how much fun you can have with this one. All you need is a bunch of scrap paper, newspapers, or the million plastic bags you have from the grocery store. Crumple them up, use old boxes for forts, and have at it.
  2. Bike Tour Use your evenings to pick out different local destinations and bike there as a family.
  3. Mini-Bike Tour If you have small children, this one is great fun. Use sidewalk chalk to draw different places to bike to in the driveway, or down the sidewalks. Let your kids pick the places, and encourage them to be as inventive as possible – Australia, the bottom of the ocean, Mars – they’re all options!
  4. Mad Science! For a simple science experiment that kids love, build your own erupting volcano! All you need is a 2-liter of Diet Coke and a package of mint Mentos. For the hard core scientists, an explanation is provided at NewScientist.com, citing the American Journal of Physics. 5. Magic Carpet Ride! The beauty of this game is in its simplicity. Spread a blanket out in the lawn and jump on. Whether you close your eyes or not is up to you; let everyone participate in telling a story about where you’re traveling. A fun twist is to stop in the middle of a sentence and have the next person pick up the story.
  6. Fun With Food! Watermelon is basically the quintessential summer food. Have a seed spitting contest for distance, for most seeds in a bucket in the lawn, or your own variation on this theme.
  7. Relay Races Talk about endless possibilities – take turns running to a tree and back, doing three somersaults, crabwalking, making a basket, carrying an egg on a spoon, or racing with cups of water to see who can go the faster while spilling the least. With basic household items, you can have a variety of races and lots of fun!
  8. Nature Walk With a couple of books from the library, you can go for a walk and look for all kinds of flora and fauna. See if your kids can identify the birds they see, bugs on the ground, or trees growing nearby.
  9. Just Walk Spending time together – both quantity and quality – is one of the best investments you can make in your family. Walk (or bike) with no agenda at all other than engaging with your spouse and/or kids.
  10. The GMCC You knew it was coming! All five of our operating units offer fun activities for families through a variety of programs. We even have free programs like the Midland Community Center’s Family Fun Nights, sponsored by Arbury Insurance. Contact us at 732-8937 for more information.

Use your extra daylight hours wisely, and enjoy the summer!
