North-End Fitness Center Q&A for Members

Q. What is happening?
A. Through an agreement reached earlier this month, Greater Midland will take over operation of Smitty’s Ironworks and Family Fitness, rebranding it as Greater Midland North-End Fitness Center. Smitty’s will close on December 19 at 8:00pm. The new facility will open on January 5 at 5:00am.
Matt Smith, the owner of Smitty’s, has a passion and desire to focus on personal training clients and will be joining the Greater Midland organization to continue his work in this area.

Q. Where can I work out during the closure?
A. We invite all Smitty’s members to be our guests as Premier members at the Community Center from December 20 until January 4. Simply bring your membership card to the Welcome Desk and we will handle the rest.

Q. What will happen to my Smitty’s membership?
A. Smitty’s members who have a current annual membership that has already been paid in full will transition into Core members to the North-End fitness center when it opens on January 5 and will incur no additional fees. The membership will need to be renewed according to the date in your contract. You will need to fill out membership paperwork and receive a new membership card. You also have the option to upgrade your membership to our new Premier option.

Smitty’s members who have a current membership that is paid monthly are invited to review the new membership options and choose the membership that best fits your needs. After you select your membership, you will need to fill out paperwork to become a new member. If you make the decision prior to January 1, we are offering you discounted pricing until September 1, 2015.

Q. If I currently have a membership at Smitty’s and also at the Community Center what are my options?
A. Please talk to a member services specialist or send an inquiry to info@greatermidland.org.

Q. How do I become a member?
A. You can review the membership options online at greatermidland.org. After you have determined the membership that is best for your needs, you can download our membership application online before visiting one of our centers in person to complete the process.
During the time of the facility closure, we will have employees designated to help you at the Community Center. Once North-End Fitness Center opens on January 5, we will be happy to assist you in person there.

Q. What are the membership options and prices?
A. We are thrilled to offer the most comprehensive health and wellness options in the region.
Sign up before January 1 to receive 2014 pricing until September 1, 2015. The full list of pricing options is listed on our Membership page.

Q. If I choose an Auto-Draft Membership, when will you draft from my designated account?
A. When you join between the 1st and the 15th of the month, you pay your Joining Fee and First Month up front and we start drafting from your account on the 20th of the NEXT month. For example:   Join on 01/08/2015, the first draft would take place on 02/20/2015.

When you join between the 16th and the end of the month, you pay your Joining Fee and First Month up front and we start drafting from your account on the 5th of the FOLLOWING month. For example:   Join on 12/17/2014, the first draft would take place on 02/05/2015.

Q. Is the monthly auto-draft membership a contract for a certain time frame?
A. Your monthly auto-draft membership is a continuous membership until you make a change or cancel it.  Members may cancel their membership at any time with a 30-day notice in writing.  There is a simple one-page form to complete at the Welcome Center.

Q. What are the hours of the new North-End Fitness Center?
A. We recognize that convenience is a critical factor for you and look forward to offering you a wide range of days/times to meet your needs, including:

  • Monday through Thursday: 5:00 am to 9:00 pm
  • Friday: 5:00am to 8:00 pm
  • Saturday: 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Sunday: 10:00am to 3:00 pm

Q. Will there be new equipment?
A. We have carefully examined the equipment and will be reconditioning most pieces. At this time, we do not have plans to add new equipment. We are always open to your suggestions.

Q. What will be different?
A. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to build on the solid foundation Matt and Julie have created over the past 10+ years. Our intention with the fitness center is to design it around our members’ needs to set you up for success in reaching your health and wellness goals.
When you walk in to North-End Fitness Center, some of the bigger changes you’ll notice (other than the name) are a refreshed facility and the additional opportunities you’ll be exposed to as a member of the Greater Midland family. This includes our exclusive Premier Membership that acts as an all-access pass to our facilities throughout Midland, including the Community Center, Tennis Center, North Family Center, Coleman Family Center and North-End Fitness Center.

Q. Will kids be welcome at the facility?
A. We will continue to offer babysitting services for parents. In addition, we do have membership options at North-End for kids ages 12 and up. Like all of our facilities, we want our members to feel comfortable when they’re with us. We expect our members and guests to be considerate of others and will encourage appropriate behavior.

Q. Can I still powerlift?
A. Our intention with the fitness center is to design it around our members’ needs to set you up for success in reaching your health and wellness goals. We encourage individuals of all ages and fitness levels to participate at North-End.
